as much as i loathe art openings, i managed to have a very nice time at one last night at the nicole klagsbrun gallery.

i first discovered artist mika rottenberg's work at the greater new york show at ps1 way back in 2004. her site specific video installation, mary's cherries, was one of the best things in the show.

her video work is mesmerizing, funny, odd, and absurdist...and the new work i saw last night is no exception. in her new video installation, dough, intricate machines balance great heaps of glistening dough, worked by a variety of uniformed women stuffed into tiny rooms and eventually risen with the aid of the allergy-triggered tears of a large woman.

see dough until 2.25.06 at...

nearly every day, i walk by the soho varda shop here in new york city, but rarely glance in the window. varda makes lovely, high-quality italian leather shoes that are always very classic, but usually not particularly eye-catching.

these however, had me quite transfixed. old lady chic.

my grandfather has a large collection of viewmaster reels and some of my very best memories are of spreading them all out on the floor around me, popping one after another into the viewmaster and transporting myself to places all over the globe and into stories both familiar and unfamiliar.

portland-based film artist vladimir has taken the viewmaster as her medium and created vladmasters, handmade viewmaster reels based on stories by everyone from kafka to calvino. some feature cd soundtracks and occasionally, vladimir "performs" her viewmaster stories for audiences.

beautiful, tiny and brilliant.

(buy them at motel, buy olympia or quimby's)

christine j. brandt's rings are truly opulent displays of natural beauty. i first spied them adorning the models in the spring 2006 show for the fashion line doo.ri, but they've been written about quite a lot since then. i'll happily join the echo, because i've never really seen anything like them.

unite! the revolution is upon us.

happy new year!
