i am hoping for happy accidents
because hope makes me happy and not sad.

on the way to work today, on my favorite street in nyc,
i collided with some art
in the window at the apt.
now i'm all covered in chalk..but smiling.

this just took my breath away. seriously gorgeous.
i am obsessed with black glass.

accidental interview #4
...a periodic presentation from hoping for happy accidents

michel gondry has an immense imagination.
his work is surreal, full of humor and magic and beauty.
he's really the best at what he does.
due to a very very happy accident, i had an opportunity to ask him a few of my slightly obtuse questions. it was a pleasure and i feel very lucky.

he's made so many wonderful things...

his music video for human behaviour by bjork
(watch it here)

his new film, the science of sleep
(images via this site, as is the image at the top of the page)

...not to mention the documentary dave chapelle's block party and music videos for everyone from the white stripes to radiohead to daft punk.

what inspires your work?
my ex-girlfriends

happiness is...
chemicals in your brain

browsing often...
+ amazon
+ ebay
+ art store

wishing for...
+ health
+ courage
+ a nice girlfriend

listening to...
+ morton feldman
+ fats waller
+ michael jackson

escaping with...
+ a brain book
+ a relativity book
+ an evolution book

my bed

stuff my face

try to sleep and fail

what are you looking forward to?
next holidays and the fall too

the future is...
moving toward
the past is...

your happiest accident?
the piano falling in my new movie the science of sleep

perfect for summer. just perfect.
(via better living through design, which happens to be a new favorite)

don't forget to check back for tomorrow's accidental interview...

a new book to be excited about...

says mcsweeney's:
"a collection of drawings and diagrams, often in the form of trees, mapping the strange corners of his mental landscape. the result is an eclectic blend of faux science, automatic writing, self-analysis, satire, and an attempt to find connections where none were thought to exist—a sort of self-therapy, allowing the hand to "say" what the voice cannot."

i saw these on a woman while shopping near work a few weeks back and have been smitten every since.

she told me where to find them...and i visit them every now and then.

i think my boyfriend thinks i've gone baby crazy.
beautiful, utilitarian swedish children's clothing at tuss.
(thank you, anna! its nice to have another friend in sweden!)

in other news...
the aforementioned boy and i ventured out to the mitsuwa market in new jersey on sunday. it was a gorgeous day, full of perfect soba noodles, green tea ice cream, snack shopping and fudge magazine.
(oh and as if we hadn't had our fill of japanese periodicals, we also popped in at kinokuniya)

also...are you going to renegade?
i am. see you there.

one of the best things about making this blog is meeting (virtually and in person) lots of like-minded, interesting, creative people. it's another dimension of the happy accident and i love it.

so of course, i was over the moon when i got a very nice message from joy of joy o designs, introducing me to her lovely line of jewelry. its everything that i love - organic, unique, handmade beautiful things.

(available on her site and at rare device, among other lovely shops)

one of the things i was doing during my virtual absence in may was visiting my family in texas (where i happened to snap the photo above).

a lot of things are changing in my family right now and its exciting and unsettling, happy and a little sad...all at once. my younger sister is moving off to college, my youngest sister is entering her teenage years and my parents are moving to a new home.

i've always embraced change in my life, looking forward to the new. but for the first time, while visiting texas, i found myself doing a little looking back and feeling a little sad that despite how bright our future is, nothing is really ever going to be the same way it was.

so, after a long and varied may, full of busy days and sleepy nights, i'm back. and i am very very happy to be back now that life is less busy, still a bit sleepy and not quite so varied.

posting will be driven by whim and by accident, as before. sometimes more, sometimes less. hopefully you'll find it more charming than annoying.

a sidenote...
due to utter exhaustion and limited resources, there will be no general store.

i want to focus on some art projects that i'm working on (more to come about that soon), as well as try some new things with this little happy spot. so until i can find some more hours in the day, my little store is on hold.

okay. on to the best part.

early jewelry has some covetable new things.

did you know that tiny showcase is now offering letterpress prints?
neither did i. but they are. and they're wonderful.

another reason to love moleskine.
(thank you jason kottke)

just four words:
thom yorke solo album.
its gorgeous. gorgeous.
(would you like to hear some of it?)
