i never thought i'd get this excited about a mobile home.
(via moco loco)

yesterday afternoon, my boyfriend jan and i braved the blustery winds of chelsea to see the work of vancouver-based artist brian jungen at the new museum. i'm so glad that we did. at first glance, the gallery felt like a natural history museum. giant floating whale skeletons are rendered from the ubiquitous white plastic lawn chair (ironic that these skeletons are constructed from petroleum byproducts). aboriginal masks are crafted from expensive nike sneakers and human hair. metallic soccer balls are re-stitched into menacing blobs. aluminum copies of air jordan display boxes great you in every corner. jungen's obsession with re-fashioning existing objects is extremely engaging and quite beautiful.

unconventional knitwear at keep & share.
they'll even let you borrow pieces to try out at home.
(be sure to see the knit ballet slippers)

"you'll be glad to know that my demands are small
...one step closer to you"

small demands from neenon.

i'm all excited about these edgy, luxurious unisex scarves from godspeed the well dressed man.

this past weekend, i finally made it to the andrea zittel exhibition at the contemporary art museum in houston. it was a wonderful and weird collection of some of zittel's personal uniforms and unique, tiny spaces. please be sure to see it when it comes to the new museum in new york this january.

in the meantime, you can read a great article about andrea right here.

time for an eye feast.
..............................................................................hungry?

one of the lovely holiday gifts that i received this year was a strange little book called the amish elf, by chris kerr. i am endlessly fascinated.

please be sure to get your own here.

other totally amazing creative inspiration:
+ this is ocean
+ vesolt
+ polaroid photography collective
+ susie macmurray
(the first two were found via the equally amazing ruby mag)

(oh and thank you for everything karen! check your mailbox soon...)

i must have this beautiful print by ed templeton.
it makes my ears feel funny.

while in texas this past week, i was lucky enough to get a moment to visit one of my favorite places in the entire world...

the lillie and hugh roy cullen sculpture garden, designed by isamu noguchi.

see more photos here.

this ring is just fabulous.
it would make a very lovely wedding band.
see and buy it (and jewelry designer sarah graham's other work) here.

this new 5 year datebook by APC is really elegant.
i'd buy one if i hadn't already bought a moleskine.

Thursday, December 22, 2005

cha cha, toronto-based freelance graphic designer lori chalmer's new line of accessories, is totally dreamy. every handmade and hand dyed piece is so unique and beautifully embellished, but i am especially taken with her clutches and wristlets.

her pieces of art can be found at cut + paste or by e-mailing lori directly at lori(at)chachainfo(dot)com.

suceed carefully, fail beautifully.

early jewelry makes beautiful every day pieces, like these bone earrings.

i had a dream last night about this faux fur shrug by misile at unsung designers.

Sunday, December 18, 2005

a stellar interview with the most excellent design duo sanaa.
(found at designboom)

worth noting...
naive, me, and n.e.e.t.

last night i saw the wonderful everywhere choreographed by wally cardona at the brooklyn academy of music. imagine a field of untethered posts with lighting that feels alive. sometimes anxious, sometimes fluid dancers building an architecture of bodies and gesture in the empty space. phil kline's music was stunning, ethel was wonderful and the dancing was unreal. see it when it tours, you won't be disappointed.

oh and just a reminder...
the itp show begins tonight.

its getting harder and harder to find cute boots, but these recently stopped me in my tracks. i love love love the lirium boot by cresciente (they look a bit like a certain pair of j.crew wedge boots i coveted a year or two ago, but regrettably, never purchased...and they cost more...ack!).

i opened my first holiday present last night...
its an absolutely gorgeouse handmade walnut cheese plate with turquoise inlay from clio home.

i feel lucky to have such kind, generous and thoughtful friends.

bing bang bam boom...
i love it all...and they donate 10% of their sales to the ACLU.

confusing and achingly beautiful knits from tom scott.

more of the good stuff...
+ clothing like a dream at h. fredricksson
+ clever (and slightly insane) jewelry at beatica
+ more unusual fur (faux, of course) at cat bird

i am inspired these days, by all things furry and feathered. which is why i am taking a look today at the surrealist sculptural work of meret oppenheim. conceptually her work is equally compelling, as it re-orients everyday objects to allude to female sexuality and the exploitation of the male gaze.

i'm not a huge fan of d squared, but i do sort of love this little clock key chain (although it is absurdly expensive). available at aloha rag.

Wednesday, December 14, 2005

i love grey ant. available at chocosho and active endeavors.

the fly by night bag by nam kim is just like those wonderful military surplus helmet bags i see being toted around soho, but in super luxe leather. unisex, chic and perfect for carrying tons around town or for travel. available in brown or black at virgin threads.

dirty librarian chains, susan domelsmith's line of jewelry from re-worked vintage chains and mixed metals is so edgy and interesting. i must get my hands on this "journal" necklace.

minimal, dark and brooding with impecable tailoring and exquisite details...veronique branquinho's fall 2005 collection is totally lush.

Tuesday, December 13, 2005

oh... my... what's this?

super shiny indoor/outdoor furntiture by rebecca newnham.
(via moco loco)

i am both amazed and inspired by danish designing duo viktor & rolf. like a gilbert & george for the fashion world, they are always doing something slightly outside of the world of manistream fashion, but with an elegance that's hard to match. they've recently opened an opulent eponymous boutique in milan, in which everything but the merchandise is upside down (see it on their site). creative, amusing, inside-out, beautiful and topsy-turvy...

i'd like to invite all my new york city readers to...

the ITP winter show 2005

date and time:
12/18/2005, 2pm - 6pm
12/19/2005, 5pm - 9pm

location:
interactive telecommunications program (ITP)
new york university
tisch school of the arts
721 broadway
south elevators to 4th floor

"an amazing display of interactive technologies, resulting in physical installations and screen-based projects. twice a year, ITP hosts a student show that draws roughly 2,000 visitors over the two days. the diversity and creativity of the students are evident in the work as they explore a wide range of fields like interactive art and sound, assistive technology, wireless devices and physical computing to name a few."

this event is free and open to the public.

come and see some of my boyfriend jan's [also known as jas and john] work. his project is called "now and then" and he describes it as "a visually and conceptually engaging art piece about time that allows you to interact with your own past self." you can read more about his project and the other projects in the show here.

i adore the jewelry from circadian designs.
(available at azalea)

artist margaret dorfman makes stunning vessels from pressed and dried fresh vegetables. the result is something really beautiful.

Saturday, December 10, 2005

i've been a fan or rena tom's jewelry for a while, but she's really outdone herself with this elegant tassel necklace in her holiday collection.

(if you live in new york city, be sure to check out her wonderful new brooklyn boutique, rare device.)

i was stunned when i recently discovered alex marshall tableware. i've been looking high and low for organic, beautiful ceramics for everyday use (+ well-made, sturdy and affordable) to blend with the discontinued asian tableware that i already have in my collection. alex marshall is exactly what i have been looking for....even the candles are a marvelous idea.

anzevino and florence makes unusual and versatile casual separates. my favorites are the tuxedo hoody, branches tee, skip dress and debutant top, but they also make an equally cool collection of men's and women's t-shirts for the andy warhol museum. get it while its hot.

i am completely in love with the absolutely stunning porcelain by daniel reynolds.
(discoverd via karin)

dear me...
don't you want these yummy treats from fashionable los angeles patisserie, boule bakery? oh my!

Thursday, December 08, 2005

anna wenzel makes sculpture and installations that marry the idyllic and the nightmarish. discomfort never looked so interesting.

something fresh and cool to wear to holiday parties...

...great silver wired earrings from lauren wolf and a dynamic silver bubble ring from pio.

ever since i discovered these a few months back...i can't get them out of my head. i love my vintage snake print sandals, but these twelfth street by cynthia vincent stamped python anklet ballerina flats can be worn year round.

(theory makes a super cute snake print flat too)

one of my all-time favorite sites...
the disturbing world of dutch animator hans hoogerbrugge.

(oh and on a completely unrelated note...more beautiful rooms on flickr.)

i love eco-friendly design so i was overjoyed to take a peek at branch home (found via design*sponge). i love the (felt!!!) capsule light by mio (pictured above), the alentejo cork bowls, the tons of products by bambu and even the handmade kitchen towels.

other good sites for beautiful eco-friendly home items:
+ viva terra
+ II KH
+ green feet

pretty jewelry can be found at kirt holmes.

i'm beside myself because tonight i am going to see goldfrapp in their only u.s. performance of their current tour.

velvety, dirty, lush, glam, sexy, operatic, electro, disco goodness.

i can't wait.

if you've been reading this blog for a while, then you know that i love furniture made out of wood. its organic, strong and gets better with age. here are a few of my recent favorites:

+ stew design makes the strata chair pictured above (they also make a matching sofa)

+ the wonderful scrapile in brooklyn, ny

+ rg furniture specializes in reclaimed wood

+ as does designer john houshmand

+ and last but not least, eric manigian

oh and also...
designboom is having an interesting design competition.

latico makes really nice leather bags (i am especially drawn to the one in the upper right hand corner). they come in lots of colors and, now that i think about it, some of them look similar to the bags at mo851 (which i also happen to like).

painter alika cooper makes elegant, ethereal and moody pictures that i wish i had made myself. you will too.

ever since kathy over at 16 sparrows posted about these (which i plan on ordering in a few colors for the winter), i've been searching high and low for some really great socks and tights. some good sources include, ilux, dosty, and i would love a pair of these from stocking girl (found via muse to muse).

good mornings only cost $1.95 at pearl river.

kelly lynn (of little paper planes fame...which happens to be newly updated with good stuff like marci's ship necklace) and her friend mitzi have created a new clothing line called augustine. its divine. all of it looks like the clothes the cool girl in your summer art class would wear.

you know who i mean.

you can be the cool girl too.

i've never been much attracted to the cute...so i suprised myself by falling in love with these cute cute cute things:

+ this darling nest egg corsage and equally darling dainty bird pins can be found at pretty good things.

+ these cute and bizarre totes from noodoll e-shop.

+ illustrator and designer beci orpin is super cool and so is her wacky (and cute!) line of fashion and accessories, princess tina, which is available at fred flare and busy-being.

i love nearly everything at finnstyle (found via poppy talk).
they have everything from marimekko to woodnotes, but i especially love the iittala 24h collection of ceramics for the table.

love. nature. more.

you can get a lovely organic cotton t-shirt inspired by the natural beauty of coastal maine at milo in maine.

before i forget...
make sure to order one of painter/illustrator camilla engman's gorgeous calendars...because we all need a little beauty every day. and speaking of camilla, here is my contribution to peeping friday.

i love the new converse nubuck suede chuck taylors. they look so luxe and go with just about anything.

you can now also design your own chucks, customizing with everything from velvet fabrics to text.

also...
prefab goodness can be found at retreat homes and brett zamore design (love the shot-trot).

los angeles-based jewelry line alex and chloe offers unusual little bits for not much cash.
